5 Of The Best Transfers Made By Manchester City In January Including Ex Newcastle Ace And Current Arsenal Star

The January transfer window has now shut, with the football clubs across England concluding their business. It wasn’t the most inspiring of windows for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – here we are looking at 5 of the best transfers made by Manchester City in January.

It was a surprise to see Joao Cancelo leave on loan to Bayern Munich as he announced on Instagram to the fans on transfer deadline day but clearly Pep thinks he has enough cover.

In this list, we’ll be looking at a legendary midfielder, one of the most underrated strikers of the past 20 years and two players who still play for the club.

Julian Alvarez

One of two players on this list still at Manchester City, Julian Alvarez hasn’t quite managed to show his best yet at the Etihad Stadium but he looks like a serious player. However, while playing as understudy to Erling Haaland, who can blame him?

The Argentinian centre forward has appeared in 15 Premier League games, scoring four goals – of these 15 games, he only made the starting eleven in four of them.

While very much in the shadow of Haaland, La Arana still has plenty to offer. He was part of the Argentina World Cup winning squad – so far, he’s picked up 19 caps for La Albiceleste, scoring seven goals.

Aymeric Laporte

The second current Manchester City player, some may criticise Laporte for his lapses in concentration – despite this, he’s still a top quality centre back who is perfect for the modern game.

Physical, quick and excellent on the ball, Laporte was a great addition to the squad when he signed for City in January 2018. He plays internationally for Spain, despite being born in France.

In total, Laporte has made 118 Manchester City appearances, scoring eight Premier League goals.

Edin Dzeko

Something of a blast from the past, Edin Dzeko joined City all the way back in January 2011. A natural goalscorer, Dzeko was adept at finding the back of the net wherever he went.

At City, Dzeko scored 50 Premier League goals across 130 games. Additionally, the Citizens also won two Premier Leagues, a League Cup and an FA Cup during the Bosnian hitman’s stint at the club.

Dzeko was also prolific for his country – he’s considered perhaps the greatest Bosnian player in history. When tallied up, he has scored 64 Bosnia and Herzegovina goals across 126 caps.

Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus was initially signed as the long term solution to an ageing Sergio Aguero – Pep may have said ‘we cannot replace him’ in regards to the Argentine superstar, but that’s definitely what he hoped Jesus would do.

Sadly, despite the glut of goals he scored for City, the club never really seemed to have faith in him to take Aguero’s mantle.

He put the ball in the net 58 times for Guardiola’s boys across 159 games. Now, Jesus plays his football for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Craig Bellamy

The oldest player on the list, Craig Bellamy was a very highly respected talent in his day. Capable of carrying the ball from midfield and scoring goals, the Welshman may have had his critics, but he was always a class act on the pitch.

Over the course of his impressive career, Bellamy played for teams such as Liverpool, West Ham and Newcastle – he also picked up 78 Wales caps.

Bellamy didn’t spend too long at City, but he made his mark nevertheless. In total, he scored 12 goals in 40 Manchester City games.
