Best Central Midfielders In The Premier League This Season

Central midfield is arguably the most difficult position to play – especially in the Premier League, where players are given such little time on the ball.

In the breakneck pace of the modern game, players in the middle of the park must possess excellent ball control, passing and composure, as well as the ability to make the right decision at a split-second’s notice.

These four players can do all of these things to an incredibly high standard. In our opinion, these are the best central midfielders the Premier League has to offer – do you agree?

Alexis Mac Allister

What a season Alexis Mac Allister is having. After largely going under the radar in the season previous, the 2022/23 campaign has been a real breakout year for the young Argentine.

So far this season, he has scored ten goals in all competitions for the Seagulls – the 24-year-old also notched up a pair of assists along the way.

Mac Allister also played a huge role in Argentina’s heroic 2023 World Cup campaign. In the tournament, he scored a goal during the World Cup final and only failed to miss one of La Albiceleste’s – it is no wonder that teams such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are thought to be interested in snapping him up.

Bruno Guimaraes

Of all the midfielders on this list, Bruno Guimaraes is perhaps the most well-rounded. He can do it all – he’s a skilled defender, but his real talents lie in playmaking.

The Brazilian has very few weaknesses in his game. His quick feet allow him to work his way out of tight spots and open up defences – likewise, he is also an indefatigable runner with an enormous gas tank.

He has been Newcastle’s primary creative dynamo this season – so far, he has scored four goals and has notched up four assists in all competitions.

Martin Odegaard

After a disappointing start to his career at Real Madrid, where many thought his limitless potential would be squandered, Martin Odegaard is finally showing the world what he can do at Arsenal – and how.

He has often been the Gunners’ creative lynchpin this season, making dangerous runs from deep and picking out line-splitting passes to his teammates.

He’s an effective goalscorer, too – so far, the Norwegian superstar has scored 11 goals in the Premier League, alongside eight assists.

Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne is perhaps the greatest midfielder in Premier League history. He combines tireless running with unparalleled passing ability, with often devastating results.

He’s a brilliant goalscorer too, showing great composure in one-on-one situations – this season, De Bruyne has scored seven goals in all competitions, including a mind-boggling 25 assists.

The Belgian just seems to get better with age. Despite being 31 years of age, he has not slowed down at all. Is he the best player in the world?
