Manchester City are expected to be one of six English clubs involved if the go-ahead is given to a new European Super League.
A document which outlines the plans for the new tournament were leaked to the press yesterday, and it does have the potential to shake up the game in Europe. We take a look at some of the important details included in the proposal.
- The tournament will be made up of 20 teams with at least six from England, three from Italy, three from Spain, two from Germany and one from France.
- There will be two groups of ten clubs, with 18 group matches being played in total (with each team playing against each other home and away). The top four from each group will then play a two-legged knockout tournament (quarter-final, semi-final and final) to determine the winner.
- Matches would be played in midweek allowing all clubs to participate in domestic games at the weekend.
- The annual prize fund would be £2.66 billion, with the winning club receiving £213m.
- The 15 “founding clubs” will also be given an initial £3.1 billion “infrastructure grant” after the Super League is officially established.
