BBC columnist Guillem Balague has tipped Chelsea to get involved in the battle to sign Barcelona’s Lionel Messi on a free transfer next summer.
The Argentinian looks unlikely to remain at the Camp Nou unless a new president can persuade him to stay, and it has been widely reported that Manchester City would be the heavy favourites to sign the Argentinian superstar. However, Balague claims Chelsea should not be ruled out as a potential option:
“Chelsea are definitely in the equation if Messi becomes available. Chelsea will insist they want to hear everything that is going on. If they have the money, they will want to be involved too. Remember, there is no transfer fee.”
Messi did consider moving to Chelsea a number of years ago when Jose Mourinho was manager at Stamford Bridge but his close connections with Pep Guardiola mean City are still his likeliest destination if he leaves Spain at the end of the season.
The Citizens’ position in the race for the Barca legend has been strengthened with Guardiola having signed a two-year contract extension. Messi will be able to speak to foreign clubs in a month’s time so we may not have to wait too long to find out where he has decided to play next campaign.
