City And United Join Bayern In Race For £72m Rated La Liga Defender

Manchester City and Manchester United have both made their interest known in Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez, according to reports in the Spanish media.

Bayern Munich are said to be frontrunners for the French World Cup winner, with the Bundesliga club willing to pay his €80m (£72m) release clause.

The German side were not prepared to pay the buyout fee upfront so the clause wasn’t activated. Atletico have, however, told them to return in the summer when they may be more willing to sell.

That will give City and United time to line up their own bids for Hernandez. The Citizens have struggled for options at left-back with Benjamin Mendy having been sidelined for most of the season due to a knee injury.

The Atletico defender can play either as a fullback or as a left-sided centre back, which would provide Guardiola with a number of options.

City previously tried to sign Lucas and his brother Theo Hernandez in a double deal back in 2016, but the transfer never materialised. Will a move for the 22-year-old work out this time? We shall have to wait and see
