Manchester City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain has made Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri their number one target to replace Fernandinho, according to Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old was linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium earlier this month, along with his teammate Saul Niguez, but it appears the Citizens have now made him their priority summer signing.

With Fernandinho turning 34 in May, manager Pep Guardiola has already expressed his desire to find a long-term replacement for the Brazilian.

However, Rodri is also interesting a number of other clubs, and there will likely be a battle for the Spaniard’s signature.

City could avoid all of that if they trigger the midfielder’s €70m (£60m) release clause but that would break the club’s transfer record.

Rodri only joined Atletico from Villarreal last summer but has been in good form for the La Liga club, having played 42 matches in all competitions this campaign, making 37 starts in a holding midfield role.
