City Join Chelsea As Contenders To Sign 58 Cap Dutch International Defender

Manchester City have joined Chelsea in pursuing Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, according to reports in the Italian media.

The 30-year-old, who has 58 caps for the Netherlands, has just a year left on his contract and it has been claimed that he could be available for around €15m (£13m).

Inter are unlikely to hand de Vrij an extension and they are said to be willing to let him go as they are looking to raise funds to snap up both Torino’s Bremer and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.

Whether City would actually be tempted to sign de Vrij, it seems doubtful. At the moment, manager Pep Guardiola has four excellent centre-backs at his disposal, including Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and John Stones.

Ake has been linked with a move away from the Etihad, with Chelsea coincidentally also reportedly interested in the Dutchman, but it would be a surprise if the Citizens were considering de Vrij as his potential replacement.
