Jamie Carragher Names City Star Among His 3 Favourites To Be PFA Players’ Player Of The Year

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is one of his three favourites to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher named Foden, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal’s Declan Rice as standout candidates for the accolade:

“Liverpool want the quadruple. Manchester City seek another treble. Phil Foden, Virgil van Dijk and Declan Rice can secure themselves a double. One of the trio can be a Premier League champion and Player of the Year in 2024.”

“The next two league match days will go a long way to influencing who wins, with City facing Liverpool and Arsenal in successive games. All three player of the year contenders are the main contributors driving their sides forward, the consistently outstanding performers in a high-level run of form which shows no sign of stopping.”

What do the bookies say?

The bookmakers are pretty much in agreement that Foden’s teammate Rodri is the frontrunner for the award at the moment. While holding midfielders don’t usually get a lot of credit, there are notable exceptions such as N’Golo Kante who won the award in 2017.

Considering City are unbeaten this season when Rodri has played, his importance to Pep Guardiola’s side is not in doubt, and his contributions deserve to be recognised, especially if his team do win another league title.

Carragher is also forgetting about another City player

While the former Liverpool defender is right to point out that Foden has had a very good season so far, his 11 goals and 7 assists in 27 league appearances is hardly worthy of the Player of the Year prize.

Erling Haaland, in contrast, has 18 goals and 5 assists in just 22 games. The Norwegian international is also surely a prime contender for winning the award for the second consecutive year.
