City Slip Behind Arsenal In Race To Secure Last Minute £40m Deal For Midfielder

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has denied reports that the club are interested in signing Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

The Spaniard has previously expressed his desire to find a replacement for Fernandinho but speaking on Tuesday night, after the defeat to Newcastle, Guardiola said:

“During the month I said we were not going to do anything in the transfer market. We were clear as a club that we were not in the transfer window. I’ve said it five times. It’s finishing.”

Gueye has reportedly handed in a transfer request in order to force a move away from Goodson Park.

However, after the 1-0 win over Huddersfield, Everton boss Marco Silva revealed that the Toffees had not received any new bids for the player:

“I know the market is open until January 31, it’s always tough for us, but about the new offer, £30million, nothing came true. I asked 10 minutes ago if there was something new, but there is not.”

That may change in the coming hours, though, with both Arsenal and Paris-Saint-Germain said to be keen to secure a deal for Gueye, according to reports in England.

The 29-year-old is rated at £40m by Everton and it remains to be seen whether either team would look to match the asking price.

The Gunners are apparently only looking for loan deals this month, and would likely only be able to pay a transfer fee in the summer. That could give PSG the edge in negotiations.
