City star is England’s weak link, says Wenger

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he believes Kyle Walker is England’s weak link at the World Cup this summer.

The City right-back, who was at fault for conceding a penalty during the Three Lions’ 2-1 victory over Tunisia in their opening fixture, has been played in a central defensive role under Gareth Southgate which has worked fairly well for both himself and the team.

Walker has previously stated he feels comfortable in the position, but says he knows his best position lies at full-back.

England have made a record-breaking start to their World Cup campaign, having already qualified for the knockout stages with a game in hand and most recently thrashing Panama 6-1.

However, with the top of the table decider to come against Belgium on Thursday, Arsene Wenger has admitted he believes playing Walker at centre-back is currently England’s biggest weakness in the side.

Talking as a pundit on beIN Sports, Wenger said: “He’s not a real defender and especially not a central defender.

“He can be subject to making defensive mistakes which he would not pay for when he plays on the right.”

Wenger instead said that Spurs’ Eric Dier should be put into the side instead of the City full-back.

“He can play in the middle of the defence and as a midfielder,” he added. “I don’t know why he has not been used at all.”
