Fabian Delph – “Guardiola reinvented me”

Fabian Delph says Pep Guardiola helped him reignite his career.

Delph enjoyed a fine last season at The Etihad, playing a key role for City as they romped to the Premier League title in record fashion.

The 28-year-old played much of the season at left-back for Pep Guardiola’s side – an unfamiliar position for a player who spent much of his career prior to joining City as a centre midfielder.

Delph’s displays at full-back for City earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad – and the former Aston Villa and Leeds star has paid tribute to Guardiola for helping him reinstate himself in Gareth Southgate’s side.

“I stayed mentally strong, and I knew if I got my opportunity to play I could contribute and help the lads win games.

“I’m a very traditional English guy who believes in hard work and dedication and giving it absolutely everything. I’m there to fight and pick up second balls, to be that old English type of player, but he has reinvented me.

“Now it’s all about being calm and collected on the ball, being sensible in terms of if someone occupies my position then I need to occupy a different position.”
