Five Of The Most Successful Caretaker Managers In Premier League History

Caretaker managers have a pretty thankless task. Most are simply there to hold the fort whilst the club’s board take their time to find a new permanent coach.

However, there are times when an interim appointment has been so successful, it has led to the manager being hired for the long term.

For today’s list, we have looked at caretakers in the Premier League who have the highest points per match during their stints in charge.

Press the next page as we count down the five most successful interim managers of the Premier League era.

5) Ryan Mason – 1.71 points per game

After Jose Mourinho was sacked, the former midfielder was asked to take charge of Tottenham’s final seven games of the 2020/21 campaign.

Mason did a decent job as caretaker, winning four matches, but he also suffered defeats against Manchester City, Leeds and Aston Villa. Nuno Espirito Santo subsequently replaced him in the hot seat.

4) Darren Moore – 1.83 points per game

The former centre-back was asked to take charge of West Brom’s final six games of the 2017/18 season after Alan Pardew was sacked, with relegation almost a dead certainty.

Moore won three and drew two of his first five games in the dugout, with his only defeat coming on the final day against Crystal Palace. He was given the manager’s job on a permanent basis following his time as caretaker.

3) Roberto Di Matteo – 2.19 points per game

Andre Villa-Boas was given his marching orders by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in March 2012, and his assistant Di Matteo was asked to fill in for the rest of the season.

It proved to be an excellent decision as the Italian won the Blues’ first-ever Champions League, beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final. He also won the FA Cup.

2) Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 2.32 points per game

The Norwegian was a breath of fresh air after replacing Jose Mourinho as manager at Manchester United during the 2018/19 season, and he did improve results both in the Premier League and in Europe.

Even so, Solskjaer only guided his team to a sixth-place finish, while they lost 4-0 on aggregate to Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. He was, though, still handed the role on a permanent basis.

1) Guus Hiddink – 2.62 points per game

The Dutchman had two stints as caretaker manager at Chelsea but his first spell in 2009 was the most successful out of the two. He lost just one match after replacing Luis Felipe Scolari.

Hiddink racked up 11 wins in 13 league games, helping the Blues finish third on 83 points, just seven off champions Manchester United.
