Gundogan Fails To Rule Out Leaving City With Contract Situation Yet To Be Resolved

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says he has yet to decide on his future at the club.

The German international’s current contract expires in 15 months time but speaking at the pre-match press conference yesterday, ahead of the Schalke game, he said negotiations are ongoing:

“There is no decision yet, otherwise, I would have signed or I would have rejected a contract. I would say we are still in talks but I don’t feel that there is much pressure.”

Gundogan kept his answers cryptic, saying he is attracted to the prospect of a new challenge but is currently very happy at the Etihad Stadium:

“I’m always open-minded for challenges but it is a personal situation. Everyone has to make their own decision. At the moment I try to play as well as possible and at the end of the season we are going to talk again.”

The 28-year-old joined City from Borussia Dortmund in July 2016, becoming Pep Guardiola’s first signing as manager.

Injuries have curtailed Gundogan’s playing time somewhat over the past three seasons but he has still managed to play over 100 games for the Citizens in all competitions.

In fact, this campaign could well be his most productive in a City shirt. He has scored five goals, just one behind the six he managed last campaign. His seven assists have also matched the best he has achieved in a single season.
