Ilkay Gundogan Addresses Contract Situation As Doubts Remain Over His City Future

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says he is not close to making a decision on signing a new contract with the Premier League champions.

The German international’s current deal expires at the end of the season and, when asked whether he would put pen to paper on an extension, he was pretty non-committal:

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported back in May that Gundogan was a target for Arsenal, but the Gunners have not made a move for the 31-year-old so far this summer.

From the sound of things, there is a greater chance of the player seeing out the season with the Citizens and leaving on a free transfer.

Usually, it is not something that the Manchester side would allow but, for players over the age of 30 who have little resale value, it is something that is sanctioned from time to time, as we have seen with Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Fernandinho.

Gundogan still has a lot to offer, though, and it may simply be the case that he wants to see whether he gets more game time this campaign before committing to signing a new contract.
