“It Has To Be…” Gary Neville Selects His Most ‘Iconic’ Moment In Premier League History

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Sergio Aguero’s last-minute goal against QPR is the most “iconic” moment of the Premier League era.

The competition turned 30 years old this week and, when asked about the key highlight that defines the period, Neville had to admit Aguero’s winner (which sealed City’s first PL title at the expense of United) was the only choice:

“I couldn’t believe it. I’d never seen anything like it – I know Martin [Tyler] says that on his commentary. I was obviously looking at it from the point of view of being in the best place in the world, to be a United fan in that stadium, and they’d thrown it away. Some things just happen sometimes. It’s not my favourite moment by any stretch of the imagination – but in terms of the most iconic, it has to be.”

Everything about the moment could be described as iconic. The stakes were incredibly high, City came from 2-1 down in injury time, and they won the title on goal difference, with their city rivals being knocked off top spot.

Aguero’s composure for the goal was quite something, considering the pressure he was under. It would have been very easy to fluff his lines, but he was a world-class player. The scenes after the goal won’t be forgotten by any City supporter, and it seems the moment has also been fixed in Neville’s memory as well.
