John Stones defenders City and England team-mate following Arsene Wenger criticism

John Stones has defended Manchester City and England team-mate following heavy criticism of the 28-year-old from Arsene Wenger.

Wenger slammed Walker for his performance in England’s 6-1 victory over Panama, labelling him “not a real a defender” and expressing his belief he is the “weak-link” in the Three Lions squad.

Wenger piled in on Walker, saying: “He’s not a real defender, and especially not a central defender.

“He can be subject to defensive mistakes, which he would not pay for when he plays as a right-back.”

Walker has moved to a right-sided central defender in a back three for England and Manchester City in recent times.

And his performances have impressed many, none less so than Stones who believes Wenger’s criticism of the former Tottenham Hotspur defender is completely unjustified.

“I love it,” said Stones. “I’ve said many times that Kyle is world class in my eyes.

“I am probably biased in some people’s opinions, but even though I’ve only played with him for a season so far, from what he brings, we’ve developed quite a strong bond both on and off the pitch.

“He is a top guy and a top player, and he’s helped me a lot within the games at City, and coming into the England side he’s helped me massively.”

Stones and Walker are set to come up against City teammate Vincent Kompany in the clash of the two qualified trams in Group G tomorrow night.
