Lionel Messi expects Manchester City stars to shine in Russia

Lionel Messi says he expects both Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva to shine at this summer’s World Cup.

The Barcelona forward is travelling to Russia as part of Jorge Sampaoli’s 23-man Argentina squad, and hopes to lift the trophy at the fourth time of asking having lost in the final four years ago to Germany.

The little magician however knows he and his country will have their work cut out if they are to go all the way.

Manchester City have 16 players travelling to Russia – more than any other team in world football – however Messi believes two in-particular could have a huge impact this summer.

“Brazil have Neymar and Philippe [Coutinho],” Messi said. “Spain have Andres Iniesta and [David] Silva. Germany don’t have any one star but they are very solid.

“Belgium have [Eden] Hazard and [Kevin] De Bruyne. France have [Antoine] Griezmann and [Kylian] Mbappe.

“The tournament is full of very good players.”

Both De Bruyne and Silva enjoyed fine seasons as Pep Guardiola’s side marched to the Premier League title in record fashion, surpassing the 100 point mark on the final day with victory over Southampton.
