City Receive Positive Injury News Ahead Of Arsenal Fixture With Key Player ‘Expected To Return’ To Training

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is “expected to return” to training later this week, according to ESPN.

The Belgian did not play for his country against the Republic of Ireland and England during the last international break after picking up a groin problem in the 1-1 draw versus Liverpool earlier this month.

De Bruyne was also ruled out before the 2-0 win over Newcastle in the FA Cup quarter-final, with manager Pep Guardiola confirming that the midfielder was working hard on his fitness so he could be ready to face Arsenal.

ESPN say that City’s medical staff are now “optimistic” that the 32-year-old will be available for the Gunners fixture on Sunday, but they are remaining cautious.

City have six players on the treatment table

Guardiola may have to make late decisions on several players heading into this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash. In addition to De Bruyne, there are five others who are carrying knocks.

Kyle Walker (hamstring) and John Stones (adductor) sustained injuries during England’s two friendly games, although the former is thought to be confident of playing against Arsenal.

Manuel Akanji (knock), Matheus Nunes (foot) and Ederson (thigh) are the other players who are doubts ahead of Sunday.

De Bruyne’s future at the Etihad

The fact that the Belgian has picked up so many injuries this season has not gone unnoticed and, with his contract expiring at the end of next season, there is now growing speculation that the playmaker could leave City this summer.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia and the United States are believed to be pondering bids for De Bruyne in the next transfer window. If it is to be his final year at the Cityzens, he will be looking to go out on a high with a league title and, potentially, another FA Cup and Champions League.
