On top of this, Arsenal are thought to be interested in the player, but have yet to table an official offer. Several clubs in Saudi Arabia are also believed to be in the race, but like Arsenal, have yet to submit anything.

Should Manchester City re-sign Ilkay Gundogan?

This season, Ilkay Gundogan has been one of City’s most important players. Not only has he done a fine job as club captain, he has also provided a classy, energetic presence in midfield that most teams could only dream of.

He has been hailed as one of their ‘unsung heroes’ for several years – now, the contributions of the German international are finally being understood and recognised. Despite this, he is also 32 – arguably, his best footballing years are now behind him.

Ilkay Gundogan’s time with the Sky Blues

Gundogan signed for City back in the summer transfer window of 2016 for a reported fee of £20 million. In that time, he has made 188 appearances for the Citizens, scoring 44 league goals in that time.

While at the Etihad Stadium, Gundogan helped City to five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields and, most recently, a Champions League.
