Manchester City Vs RB Leipzig: Match Preview And Latest Injury News

Manchester City will take on RB Leipzig in their first knockout round game of the Champions League. Can City finally take home the trophy that has eluded them for so long this year?

To get this far, City needed to get through a group consisting of Borussia Dortmund, Copenhagen and Sevilla – which they did in fine style, finishing top without a single defeat.

Leipzig arguably had the tougher group – they shared it with Real Madrid, Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk. They finished second, but still qualified fairly comfortably, with a six point gap between them and the team in third.

City are expected to be without one player for their game against Leipzig – John Stones. The 28-year-old is suffering with a thigh problem and has been ruled out – he’s expected to be back in action at the beginning of March.

On top of this, Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte are both major doubts. Both players are out with illnesses and it is 50/50 as to whether they’ll play – if not, they will most likely return for the Citizens’ next Premier League game against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

City and Leipzig have played each other before in the Champions League on two occasions. The first game was a 6-3 demolition job by the Sky Blues, despite a hattrick in response from Christopher Nkunku.

The second game was very different – Leipzig ran out as 2-1 winners, with their goals being scored by Dominik Szoboszlai and Andre Silva. City fought back with a goal from Riyad Mahrez, but their comeback was halted when Kyle Walker was sent off.

As such, the game on Wednesday night can be viewed as a potential banana skin for City. Who will emerge victorious?
