Merson Backs Chelsea To Make Move For Star Who “Has No Future At City”

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to make a bid for Manchester City centre-back John Stones before the transfer window closes.

The Blues, Arsenal and West Ham have all been linked with a move for the England international this summer, but Merson believes that Stamford Bridge would be the ideal destination for the defender:

“Chelsea should go and get John Stones because there is a success story there waiting to happen. When you hear they have put defenders like Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen up for sale, you can see they need a centre back. I’ve said all along Stones would do well there. And they should go and get him now. He has no future at City.”

There is no doubt that Stones has a battle on his hands if he wants to stay in the first-team picture at the Etihad. The Citizens have already signed Nathan Ake from Bournemouth for £40m and they are likely to snap up another centre-half before the start of the new season.

However, with Eric Garcia’s future up in the air, there is still a possibility that manager Pep Guardiola will ask Stones to stay. Aymeric Laporte and Ake will be employed on the left-hand side of defence but, if Garcia does depart, the club’s options for the other centre-back position will be reduced.
