“My Focus Was Not Affected…” City Star Addresses Chelsea Transfer Reports

Manchester City centre-back Nathan Ake says he has put speculation over his future at the club firmly behind him.

The Dutchman was the subject of interest from Chelsea, but the two teams were unable to agree a fee, resulting in the defender remaining at the Etihad. Ake claims he is happy to stay and fight for his place in Pep Guardiola’s team:

“I will try to improve and make sure I get minutes, but my focus was not affected by the talk of a move. It was all in the holiday period anyway. When I arrived back at the club I was very happy to be there straight away and to see everyone. When I started training my head was 100 per cent focussed on City.”

“I haven’t really spoken to Pep Guardiola, except about normal stuff like holidays. Just private stuff. It’s all been good and I’m just ready to kick on. Obviously, you get information as well but during this holiday I tried to enjoy it and keep away from it. You only have two-and-a-half weeks or so. It’s not easy but I try to do that.”

Ake did have moments where he shone in a City shirt last season, but his lack of game time has meant he has never been able to win over the majority of supporters with his performances.

It does appear as though the club were prepared to let him go if their asking price was met, but as it is, he is now gearing up for his third season in Manchester. As he says himself, Ake is now completely focused on playing for the Citizens and it will be hoped he can make some telling contributions when called upon.
