Phil Thompson has hailed Manchester City’s Jack Grealish as the best signing of the summer transfer window.
The Liverpool legend says he was disappointed that his former club didn’t make a move for the 25-year-old, but the transfer fee meant that the Citizens were always going to be favourites for his signature:
“I would have to say Grealish is the signing of the summer. I was hoping that Liverpool would be in for him, but £100million took it beyond most teams except for Manchester City.”
Thompson also believes that Grealish could be the difference in the title race this season. The former Sky Sports pundit was still confident that Liverpool could beat City but his opinion has changed since the arrival of the England international:
“Before Grealish signed, I would have said Liverpool are a good shout for the title, but now he has made all the difference to City’s title challenge.”
Grealish has made a solid enough start to his City career, scoring once and providing one assist in four appearances, but manager Pep Guardiola will be looking for more from his £100m signing over the coming weeks and months.
Whether he’ll be the deciding factor, as Thompson says, in who finishes top of the league, we shall have to wait and see.
