Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph was a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s starting line up for England’s game against Croatia yesterday.
The 28-year-old had captained the side against the USA in a friendly on Thursday night but was expected to be on the bench for the Nations League clash.
However, an injury to Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson meant the midfielder was thrust back into the first eleven, and his performance impressed many City fans:

Fabian Delph is going into his peak years as a player, he’s a northern lad, homegrown, can play different positions and is bossing England midfield. Txiki offer him that contract extension. #ManchesterCity #ManCity #MCFC #Delph

Delph’s only two starts in the Premier League this season have come at left-back, but he played a key role for England in the middle of the park versus Croatia.
At club level, his best chance of getting more game time will likely be on the left-hand side of defence with Benjamin Mendy sidelined until the New Year after knee surgery.
Oleksandr Zinchenko and Danilo will compete with Delph for a place in the side over the coming weeks and months.
