Pochettino Responds To Speculation That He Could Take Guardiola’s Place At City

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has distanced himself from reports that he could take over at Manchester City if Pep Guardiola decides to leave the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentinian was asked about speculation linking him with the Citizens but the 47-year-old said he doesn’t like it when claims are made when managers are still in their post:

“To be honest, I don’t read too much. I didn’t read before and I don’t know, I’m lucky now because I have (assistant) Jesus (Perez) with me and he reads it all for me. He sees some news that he translates for me, but I trust him of course 200 per cent and I don’t need to read. I didn’t read before and I don’t now.”

“That’s not nice, I was working and when things happen like this and, for any coach, it’s nice to hear your name in some place and we are in a world with your colleagues (in media) we understand the rules but sometimes it’s not nice. I try to stay away from these rumours.”

Guardiola has hinted that he would be open to staying longer than the end of his current contract. However, speaking ahead of today’s match against Leicester, he said that his future at the club will be determined by results.

Currently, the Spaniard has 18 months remaining on his existing deal, and while things could certainly look a lot different this time next year, almost all City supporters will be keeping their fingers crossed that Guardiola signs an extension.

No doubt, Pochettino would be a top candidate if Guardiola were to ever depart, but most will be hoping that won’t happen any time soon.
