Premier League clubs are set to vote for a third time over whether to re-introduce five substitutes in games for the rest of the season, according to the Sun.

The newspaper reports that another shareholders meeting will take place “next week” where the controversial rule change will be on the agenda once again.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and thirteen other Premier League managers are thought to be behind the proposal, which also has the backing of the PFA, who see the change as vital in protecting player welfare.

However, it is believed that three club chairman will vote against their manager’s wishes. If that is indeed true that will leave them two short of the 14 votes necessary to back the measure.

The five substitute rule has caused major rancour with the “big six” clubs aiming their fire at Premier League chief executive Richard Masters who has refused to publicly back the plan despite PFA Chairman Gordon Taylor asking him to do so.
