Premier League To Draw Up New Game Postponement Rules That Could Come Into Effect Next Month

The Premier League are expected to rewrite rules on when games can be postponed, according to reports in the English media.

At the moment, a club must have 13 available outfield players and one goalkeeper for a match to go ahead, but there has been a lot of controversy about who is eligible to play.

Virus cases, injuries and suspensions can all deplete numbers in the first-team squad but every team in the top flight does have academy players to call upon for matches.

It has led to accusations in some quarters that some teams are gaming the system in order to get games called off so they can play them when they have a fuller complement available.

The Premier League currently assesses each postponement request on a case-by-case basis, but this could change soon. New rules may well be enforced when the Premier League returns after the winter break on February 8th.
