RANKED: How City And Other English Clubs Fare In The League After Playing In Europe

With the Champions League and Europa League group stages having ended this week, we thought it would be interesting to look at how clubs have fared in the league after taking part in midweek European games.

It does seem as though some clubs are affected more than others (using stats sourced from talkSPORT), and it is actually surprising how some successful English teams have not always coped well with the packed fixture schedule.

There is quite a disparity between certain clubs. In this article, we have taken a look at Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Press the next page as we look at how the five English teams fare in the Premier League after playing in European ties.

Chelsea – 1.48 points per game

Surprisingly, considering their five Premier League titles over the past two decades, the Blues don’t actually fare that well after they have played a European match.

Compared to the rest of the ‘big six”, they are the poorest performers, averaging less than 1.5 points in 42 league games.

Manchester United – 1.55 points per game

Interestingly, the most successful team of the Premier League era do find it more of a struggle following matches in the Champions League and the Europa League.

With the resources at their disposal, you would have thought they would have a big enough squad to cope, but it appears they are not as adept at rotating as other Premier League clubs.

Arsenal – 1.75 points per game

The Gunners were pretty decent picking up results after European matches under both Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery but that has actually begun to dip slightly since the arrival of manager Mikel Arteta.

At the moment, the Spaniard is only averaging 1.29 points a game after a European match but, it must be pointed out, that seven games is a very small sample size to be drawing any definitive conclusions from.

Manchester City – 2.07 points per game

Unsurprisingly, considering their success domestically over the past ten years, the Citizens have been pretty good at rotating their squad and winning both matches in Europe and the league.

Pep Guardiola’s record at City, in this regard, is very impressive indeed, averaging 2.24 points in matches after Champions League games. City’s record is still beaten, though, by one other team.

Liverpool – 2.1 points per game

The Reds may be famed for their big European nights at Anfield but they rarely take their focus off the league once they have played a Champions League or Europa League match.

Of course, the fact that they have only lost a handful of games domestically over the past three seasons does inflate the numbers slightly but it is a fantastic record nonetheless.
