REPORT – City Close To £50m Swoop For Dutch Starlet With Player Swayed By Chance To Play Under Guardiola

Manchester City are closing in on signing Ajax playmaker Frenkie de Jong, according to reports in England.

The 21-year-old is interesting a host of top European clubs but the Dutch international is believed to have been convinced by the prospect of working under manager Pep Guardiola.


Manchester United, Barcelona and Tottenham were also said to be looking at de Jong, with the midfielder having impressed for Ajax over the past couple of years.

The Dutchman made his first-team debut against Willem II in a cup match back in September 2016 and has gone on to make 56 appearances for the Eredivisie side.


De Jong generally plays as a holding midfielder but his flexibility means he can also play further forward, as well as a centre-half.

Ajax are reluctant to let such a talented player leave, and City will reportedly have to pay as much as £50m to land him, with a move in the summer more likely than in the January transfer window.
