REPORT – City Complete £6m Signing Of American International Goalkeeper

Manchester City have completed the signing of Colombus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen, according to Goal.com USA.

The fee is believed to be $7.5m (£6m), rising to $10m (£7.8m) including add-ons. The American international will, however, not be joining the Citizens immediately.

Steffen does not qualify for a work permit as he hasn’t played the requisite number of games for his country. It means the 23-year-old will be loaned out to one of City’s affiliate clubs.

That would suggest the most likely destination would be New York City FC but it appears that Girona are the favourites to land the shot-stopper.

The La Liga side currently have three players on loan from City, including Patrick Roberts, Douglas Luiz and Aleix Garcia, and Steffen could well be the fourth.

Considering Claudio Bravo is out for the long-term with an Achilles injury, it’s a surprise that the Manchester club won’t look to ask for special dispensation from the FA in order to bring in Steffen, but it seems Pep Guardiola will be keeping Arijanet Muric as backup to first choice Ederson.
