REPORT: Update Given On Contract Status Of Manchester City Dynamo

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is still mired in a contract stalemate with the club, as the two parties have yet to agree terms, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

On his contract, Gundogan said: “There are talks in the background and I think it’s normal. But without going into too much detail, there’s nothing decided yet.

“Of course the talks continue — and so if there’s a decision you will be the first to know.”

Gundogan’s contract, as things stand, is set to expire in the summer. He initially joined the club in 2016, when he signed from Borussia Dortmund for an estimated fee of £20 million.

At 32 years of age, Gundogan’s best years are behind him. Nevertheless, he has had a decent season in the Premier League so far, proving that he still has a role to play for the Citizens. During the current campaign, the German international has scored five goals and registered five assists in all competitions.

Should City allow Gundogan’s contract to expire, there are several clubs who are thought to be interested in signing him on a free transfer – including Barcelona and Arsenal.

Moving to Arsenal would make sense for Gundogan – he has worked with Mikel Arteta in the past (while Arteta was an assistant coach at City) and the Gunners also have a very similar style of play to the Sky Blues. At this point, however, his ultimate destination remains unclear.
