Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is backing Liverpool to beat Manchester City to the title following the Merseysiders’ 100% start to the season.
The Reds made it eight wins from eight yesterday after James Milner slotted away an injury-time penalty to scrape a 2-1 home win against Leicester City. Asked for his title prediction, Rooney replied:
“In my opinion, Liverpool look the strongest. City are a fantastic team. I think Liverpool have improved on last year, whereas City have stayed at that level of great consistency, so I think Liverpool.”
Liverpool have certainly started stronger this campaign but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will keep their form throughout the rest of the season.
There are 30 matches left to go and their lack of experience at being frontrunners may play against them over the coming weeks.
City managed to overhaul the Reds last season when they had a seven-point lead and then held their nerve by racking up a string of victories in the final few months to clinch the title.
With the likes of Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte returning for the second half of the campaign as well, the Citizens should get stronger as the season goes on.
