Sterling hoping to end 1000 day goal drought for England

Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has admitted he will ‘go crazy’ if he scores for England during the World Cup this summer.

The forward enjoyed the season of his life for City during the 17/18 campaign, scoring a whopping 23 goals as the Blues went on to win the Premier League in record-breaking fashion.

However, the England international has struggled to recreate his club form in front of goal for the Three Lions, having endured a goal drought that is close to reaching 1,000 days.

Sterling has scored twice for his country in 40 caps, the last of which dating back to October 9th 2015, against Estonia.

Speaking ahead of England’s eagerly anticipated second-round tie against Colombia, Sterling insisted he won’t be doing anything other than going crazy if he finds the back of the net.

“To be honest, I’m not a Jesse (Lingard), who has his celebrations stored. I can’t dance, I’m stiff as hell,” he told the Daily Mail.

“It’s the World Cup…put it in the back of the net, go crazy.”

Sterling also spoke about his current style of play under Pep Guardiola, saying he has matured a lot more as a footballer.

“My game has evolved in terms of being more mature. In my younger days I just wanted to run with the ball every second,” the forward continued.

“I’m getting better with my decision-making and just trying to finish my chances. I used to just dribble and stay wide and now I’m in the box more and getting more opportunities.

“I feel anyone can win it but the teams that are more disciplined – and I’m not saying Argentina and Portugal weren’t – if you stay compact, wait for your moment, take your chances…I feel we have a chance.

“In the World Cup I want to be part of a squad and team that can do something amazing for the country and hopefully go all the way and win it for the country.”
