“That’s What Title Winning Teams Do” Walker Uses Arsenal Example As He Backs City’s Mental Strength For Title Fight

Manchester City fullback Kyle Walker claims his team have the winning mentality to secure another Premier League title this season.

Every title challenge is built on a talented squad of players, but Walker says you also need a bit of luck and the right attitude to go all the way, using the 2-1 victory over Arsenal as a prime example of how the Citizens can win without always playing well:

“I think in every team, they’ve got the strength and weaknesses and we need to exploit that but I think in them certain games, when everything is riding on it or how big the game is actually going to be, sometimes you need a little bit of individual brilliance from certain people or certain individuals.”

“And you might need a little bit of luck, that’s just the way football goes. You can’t always, you know, play well and go and win football games, it don’t happen like that. I recall back to the Arsenal game which the manager touches on quite a few times that we didn’t probably deserve to go in and win that game. That’s what title winning teams do, they grind out results and go and get the points that are needed on the day.”

Anyone questioning City’s resolve only needs to go back a few seasons when they had to win 14 games in a row to secure 2018/19 title. It was an extraordinary run of results and, while Pep Guardiola’s side won’t need as many victories this time, it will still be a challenge.

Of course, a lot will ride on the match against Liverpool at the Etihad next weekend but, as Guardiola has said himself, you can only focus on the next game, so a win versus Burnley is all that matters at the moment.
