The Five Czech Stars Who Have The Most Appearances In The Premier League

After listing the top appearance makers in the Premier League era from Denmark last time, this week we turn our attentions to the Czech Republic.

For a population of just 10m people, they have produced some really outstanding players over the past 30 years, with some of the best having plied their trade in England.

The five names on this list will be very familiar to those who follow football in this country closely, and they have all recorded more than 100 appearances in the top flight.

Press the next page as we look at the Czech stars who have played the most games in Premier League history.

5) Milan Baros (Liverpool, Aston Villa And Portsmouth) – 122 apps

Considering the striker is second in the Czech Republic’s all-time goalscorer list, you would have thought that Baros would have been a prolific scorer in England but he was not.

During spells at three different clubs, he scored only 28 goals in total. Liverpool fans will, though, remember him forever after he played in the 2005 Champions League final.

4) Pavek Srnicek (Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday) – 146 apps

The keeper spent seven years at Newcastle, having a number of spells as the club’s number one during that time. He returned briefly to the Czech Republic in 1998 before being signed by Sheffield Wednesday.

Srnicek battled Kevin Pressman to be first choice keeper for 18 months before he left for Brescia on a Bosman free transfer in 2000. He did have two other brief spells in England with West Ham and Newcastle before he retired. The former Czech international sadly died of a heart attack back in 2015.

3) Ludek Miklosko (West Ham and QPR) – 169 apps

The keeper had already spent eight years at Banik Ostrava before West Ham manager Lou Macari signed him at the start of 1990. He would go on to spend another eight years as the Hammers’ number one.

Miklosko was named Hammer of the Year not long after joining the club and he was a reliable shot-stopper, who was always on hand to make important saves. After losing his place to Craig Forrest, he left for QPR before retiring in 2001.

2) Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal) – 170 apps

A talented attacking midfielder, the Czech’s time at Arsenal was blighted by injuries that prevented him from reaching his full potential.

Even so, Rosicky played for the Gunners for a decade between 2006 and 2016, racking up 170 league appearances and scoring 19 goals. He did not win a league title but he did lift two FA Cups.

1) Patrik Berger (Liverpool, Portsmouth and Aston Villa) – 229 apps

The midfielder was one of the standout performers for the Czech Republic at Euro 96, alongside Karel Poborsky, and he signed for Liverpool for £3.25m the same summer.

During seven seasons with the Reds, Berger won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup, before he left for Portsmouth on a free transfer in 2003. He had two successful campaigns on the South coast, which led to a switch to Aston Villa. Injuries meant he had limited game time during his three seasons at Villa Park. He returned home to Sparta Prague in 2008.
