The FIVE Longest Losing Streaks In Premier League History

After looking at the longest winning runs in Premier League history last week, this time we are focusing on losing streaks.

When confidence hits rock bottom, it can be very hard to get out of a rut, and it leads to some quite appalling runs of form.

It will be unsurprising to hear that all of the teams on this list were relegated from the top flight after these consecutive losses. One club actually makes it into this top five twice.

Press the next page as we count down the longest run of defeats by teams in the Premier League era.

5) Fulham –  9 Defeats – 2019

The Cottagers spent a lot of money ahead of the 2018/19 season but the campaign was a disaster, with the club going through three different coaches before being relegated back to the Championship.

Their run of losses actually took place under two different managers (Claudio Ranieri and Scott Parker), starting with a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in February before a victory over Everton ended the streak two months later.

4) Sunderland – 9 Defeats – 2005

Believe it or not, the Black Cats have two entrances on this list. This is the second-longest losing streak they went on in the same season, losing nine in a row from October to December.

It started with a defeat to Manchester United at home, with a 0-0 draw versus Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day bringing the poor run to an end.

3) Aston Villa – 11 Defeats – 2016

The Villans were relegated during the 2015/16 season, and like Fulham, went through three different managers as they ended the season bottom of the table with only 17 points.

A 6-0 home defeat to Liverpool started their losing run in February, with Remi Garde (who was only appointed in November) sacked in March before Eric Black was put in temporary charge. The streak ended with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle in May

2) Norwich City – 16 Defeats – 2021

The Canaries losing streak stretched across two seasons, with a relegation to the Championship in between. Daniel Farke’s finished the 2019/20 campaign in awful fashion with a defeat to Sheffield United leading to nine more consecutive losses.

After regaining their top-flight status, they started the current season with six more defeats before a 0-0 draw against Burnley back in October ended the run.

1) Sunderland – 20 Defeats – 2005

Like Norwich, the worst losing streak in top division history spread across two separate campaigns. Sunderland were relegated in 2003, having lost FIFTEEN games on a bounce, finishing bottom with only 19 points.

After being promoted back to the Premier League in 2005, they continued where they left off with another five losses before a draw against West Brom. That didn’t prove to be a good omen as the Black Cats went on to finish bottom once again; this time with just 15 points to show for it.
