The Five Most ‘Expensive’ Current Premier League Players Have Been Named

The CIES Football Observatory have released their bi-annual list of the most valuable players in the top five European leagues.

As well as the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, five Premier League players also made the top ten; one of which is a Manchester City player.

The list is calculated based using a number of different metrics, including age, contract duration, performances and international status.

Press the next page as we countdown the top five most ‘expensive’ players who are currently playing in the English top flight.

5) Kai Havertz (£123m)

The German international may have struggled to make an impact since his arrival in the Premier League but he is still rated as one of the most talented young players in Europe.

Chelsea will, though, be looking to see a return on their £72m investment over the next few years from Havertz.

4) Raheem Sterling (£124m)

The City forward is only ninth on the list, just ahead of Havertz, which is surprising considering his excellent form over the last few years under manager Pep Guardiola.

It is true that Sterling has had a dip in performances since the beginning of last season and that may have played a role in terms of his ranking.

3) Bruno Fernandes (£136m)

The Portuguese playmaker comes in at number four among Europe’s most valued players, and his impact since moving to Manchester United a year ago has been remarkable.

Fernandes continues to produce goals and assists in droves, and he is dragging the Red Devils into the title race almost singlehandedly this campaign.

2) Trent Alexander-Arnold (£137m)

The right-back does have his critics in England and his form this season, in particular, hasn’t been that great but his numbers can’t be argued with.

Alexander-Arnold has reached double figures for assists in each of his last two seasons, and he has already won the Premier League and Champions League at the age of 22.

1) Marcus Rashford (£150m)

The United striker actually tops the list both in terms of Premier League players and across Europe in general. At 23, his best years are ahead of him as a striker so his valuation isn’t completely unwarranted.

Rashford also has 14 goals in 26 appearances for United this campaign, so he is also beginning to back up his potential with raw numbers.
