The FIVE Youngest First Team Squads In The Premier League

There has been a lot of talk about the young age of Arsenal’s team this week after the Gunners outran a much more experienced Liverpool side in their 3-2 win last weekend.

Alan Hansen’s immortal phrase “you can’t win anything with kids” about Manchester United in 1995 was swiftly debunked when Alex Ferguson’s young team went on to win the title so age really isn’t a barrier to success.

Arsenal’s current side is among the youngest in the Premier League, and we have comprised a list of the top five first-team squads with the lowest average age.

Press the next page as we look at the youngest teams in England’s top flight (based on data from Transfermarkt).

5) Wolves – Average Age – 25.7

There are only three players above 30 in Wolves’ squad, and the recent addition of Diego Costa on a free transfer is one of those.

The rest of the club’s signings during the summer transfer window were aged 25 or younger, with 21-year-old Nathan Collins having been brought in from Burnley for £20.5m.

4) Brighton – Average Age – 25.0

The Seagulls have become synonymous with smart recruitment, and they rarely buy anyone who isn’t a player who has the potential to be re-sold for a higher value in the future.

Roberto De Zerbi’s 23-man squad currently has eight players who are 22 years of age or under, including summer recruits Billy Gilmour and Julio Enciso.

=2) Leeds – Average Age – 24.9

Like Brighton, the Yorkshire side have scoured the globe to discover hidden gems, but they also have a strong academy which means they have plenty of talent coming through the ranks.

Leeds did receive a sizeable windfall from the sales of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips this summer, and the majority of the proceeds went towards recruiting players such as Brandon Aaronson, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra who are all 23 or younger.

=2) Southampton – Average Age – 24.9

The Saints hired a new head of recruitment in Joe Shields over the summer, whose task was to bring down the age of the squad and sign some of the best young talents in Europe.

With the likes of Armel Bella-Kotchap and Romeo Lavia having joined, he looks to have succeeded. Shields’ success has already led him to being headhunted by Chelsea despite only being on the south coast for a short period of time.

1) Arsenal – Average Age – 24.4

It wasn’t that long ago that the Gunners had one of the oldest squads in the Premier League, but technical director Edu has been ruthless in changing the makeup of the team in the past few years.

Ageing players on long deals have had their contracts terminated, others have left on free transfers, while a younger generation, including Aaron Ramsdale, Gabriel, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Fabio Vieira and Martin Odegaard have come in to replace them.
