The TOP FIVE Best Paid Players At The 2022 World Cup

After profiling four ‘hidden gems’ at the World Cup last time out, we have decided to look at the other end of the spectrum this week.

We have used the info provided by website Capology.com to see which players who have flown out to Qatar earn the highest salaries.

It turns out that the top five play for just two teams, and they all earn in excess of €700,000 a week or €36.4m a year, which is a staggering amount.

Press the next page as we list the five best paid players at the 2022 World Cup.

5) Sergio Busquets – €711K A Week

The Spaniard is the first Barcelona star to feature in our top five, and many will believe he does warrant his salary, considering his ability and the fact that he is the Catalan club’s captain.

However, the fact that Busquets earns almost double what Mo Salah earns at Liverpool does demonstrate how out of control Barca’s wage bill is.

4) Frenkie de Jong – €721K A Week

It is not hard to see why Barcelona were trying to force out the Dutchman in the summer, and it is equally clear why he wanted to remain at the Camp Nou.

De Jong is a good player, and he will be important for the Netherlands at the World Cup, but he is being massively overpaid.

3) Neymar – €1.08m A Week

Brazil’s hopes at the World Cup will somewhat depend on the 30-year-old performing at his very best, and his eye-watering salary at PSG does reflect his standing in the game.

While Neymar has been labelled as overrated by some, there is a good chance that he will soon surpass Pele for goals scored at international level. He certainly hasn’t had a bad career.

2) Lionel Messi – €1.22m A Week

Up until last summer, the Argentine was the highest-paid footballer on the planet and, considering he is one of the best players in the history of the game, his wage won’t be disputed by many.

It is fair to say, though, that Messi disappointed in his first season at PSG and we have only begun to see him perform at his best level in patches.

1) Kylian Mbappe – €1.38m A Week

The Frenchman and his entourage played a blinder by playing Real Madrid and PSG off against each other to get the highest wage in football history.

Mbappe currently earns around €71.76m a season, which works out at about £61.7m. He could earn a staggering £215m over the length of his three-year contract.
