The Top FIVE Goalscorers In Premier League Derby Matches

With two huge derbies in the Premier League this weekend, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the players who have been the most prolific scorers in these fiercely contested fixtures.

To be honest with you, these types of games are not always the best spectacle, with teams rarely playing their best football.

However, they can still be exciting to watch as they can be decided by the finest of margins. The scorers on our list today, though, proved to be decisive figures on more than one occasion in these derbies.

Press the next page as we count down the five highest scorers in Premier League derby matches.

5) Shola Ameobi (Newcastle) – 7 Against Sunderland

Known as the “Mackem Slayer” on Tyneside, it is not hard to see why, considering he scored seven in just 16 Tyne-Wear derby appearances for the Magpies.

Ameobi wasn’t exactly the most prolific striker, scoring 78 times in 398 matches during his time at Newcastle, but he always seemed to be on the scoresheet against their fiercest rivals.

=3) Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) – 8 Against City

The United legend’s most famous goal against City was the overhead kick he scored in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in 2011.

Rooney also hit the back of the net on seven other occasions in the 25 derbies he played in over a thirteen-year period for the Red Devils.

=3) Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) – 8 Against United

The Argentinian international holds the joint record for most goals scored by a single player in a Manchester derby but you do have to wonder how long that will last with Erling Haaland around.

Aguero played 16 matches against the Red Devils in his career, and despite the Citizens’ dominance in the Premier League over the past decade, he still had a losing record against the club’s fiercest rivals, winning seven, drawing one and losing eight.

2) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) – 9 Against Everton

The Reds legend actually bagged a hat trick when he took on Everton back in 2012, so he will always be remembered as a nemesis for the Toffees.

It seems Gerrard was extremely motivated to score in the derby, as there is only one other team he scored more frequently against; that was Aston Villa.

1) Harry Kane (Tottenham) – 14 Against Arsenal

The Spurs striker is the undisputed king in North London derbies, with his latest goal coming in the 3-1 defeat at the Emirates back in October.

With the second fixture set to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend, who would bet against Kane getting on the scoresheet against the Gunners once again?
