“There Are Talks…” City Star Speaks Out Amid Summer Exit Rumours

Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan says discussions about his future at the Etihad are ongoing.

The German international’s contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of the season and he is already allowed to speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer. Gundogan was somewhat coy when asked about his current situation:

“There are talks in the background, I think it’s normal, but without going into too much detail there’s nothing decided yet so the talks continue and if there’s a decision you guys will be the first to know.”

Barcelona are said to be Gundogan’s most likely destination if he does decide to leave the Citizens this summer. However, the Catalan club have salary restrictions imposed on them by La Liga and it remains to be seen whether they can free up the funds required.

Reports in Spain last month also mentioned Arsenal as a potential suitor. The Gunners were credited with an interest in the 32-year-old last year and it appears Mikel Arteta’s side are still keen on the midfielder.

As Gundogan says, though, a lot will depend on how contract negotiations progress. The player is said to be demanding a two-year extension despite his age and, if doesn’t get what he wants, he is expected to leave City after seven seasons.
