Top 5 Premier League Teams Who Have Used The Most Academy Trained Players So Far This Season

Managers are not always brave enough to use academy players, especially in the Premier League where there is pressure to get results immediately.

However, academies at well-funded top-flight clubs are managing to produce top-rated youngsters who are too talented to ignore.

Today, we look at the Premier League clubs who have given the most opportunities to their academy products over the course of the 2021/22 season (based on data from CIES Football Observatory).

Press the next page as we count down the top five teams who have used the most academy trained players this campaign.

5) Tottenham – 5 (17.9% of Minutes)

There were actually three other clubs, Leicester (17.6%), Liverpool (10.9%) and Everton (9.5%), who have fielded five academy players in the Premier League this season but Spurs have given theirs more minutes.

A large bulk of those will, of course, be for Harry Kane, but the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp have also played a substantial number of matches.

4) West Ham – 6 (13% of Minutes)

The Hammers’ participation in the Europa League has meant that manager David Moyes has been increasing the game time of some of the youngsters in his squad.

In addition to Declan Rice, Mark Noble and Ben Johnson, players such as Dan Chesters, Harrison Ashby and Sonny Perkins have all been given (albeit limited) runouts.

3) Arsenal – 6 (15.4% of Minutes)

The Hale End academy has been excellent at producing youngsters over the past two decades, and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been relying on some of them in the club’s attempts to secure a top-four finish.

Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe have been key players this season, while Eddie Nketiah has emerged as Arsenal’s first-choice number nine in recent weeks.

2) Chelsea – 6 (25.4% of Minutes)

Like Hale End, Cobham has a production line of young talent, and manager Thomas Tuchel has been utilising four (Andreas Christensen, Reece James, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi) on a regular basis this campaign.

Tuchel has also been giving Ruben Loftus-Cheek more game time recently, even if he has been using him out of position as a wingback on occasion. Trevoh Chalobah has also been slowly integrated successfully into the first-team setup.

1) Manchester United – 7

The Red Devils may have had a disastrous season, but it has, at least, led to some youngsters getting minutes, most notably Antony Elanga, who has been a favourite of Ralf Rangnick’s since the German’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Hannibal Mejbri is another player who could feature more prominently before the end of the campaign, with the teenager getting chances off the bench recently.
