Until very recently, the fullback role was perceived as one of the least glamorous positions on the football pitch, but thanks to the likes Pep Guardiola, right-backs and left-backs are now seen as vitally important in both defence and attack.

During the Premier League era, there have been players who have played the role with distinction, but not many that have stood out and would be counted legends of the game.
