United legend hilariously reacts to Sterling incident at World Cup

Manchester United and England legend Gary Neville has taken a hilarious swipe at a Colombia coach after he appeared to elbow City star Raheem Sterling at half time during England’s second round victory over the South American side.

The England and Manchester City forward was heading off the field at half time when he was struck by a member of Colombia’s coaching staff.

It was a deliberate attempt by Eduardo Julio Urtasun to provoke the 23-year-old, perhaps hoping Sterling would lash out and unsettle the England camp.

As it happened though, Sterling very maturely glanced back at the coach before continuing his run down the tunnel – no harm done. An assistant referee did see the incident, but let the coach off with a warning.

England dominated the game and were deserved winners, only to find themselves pegged level after a 93rd minute equaliser.

The Three Lions then endured a tiring 30 minutes of extra time, where Colombia admittedly looked the better side. However, it remained at one each, and the dreaded penalty shoot-out was all that remained to settle the two.

England went on to win their first ever World Cup penalty shoot-out, meaning Gareth Southgate’s men will face Sweden in the quarter-finals.

It was a fiery game, and the Colombian’s often demonstrated very unsportsmanlike behaviour, and the ITV presenters highlighted the Colombian coach elbowing Sterling as a key moment.

And at half time, ITV Sport presenter Mark Pougatch raised the issue to the pundits.

“Watch this as Raheem Sterling comes off at half time,” Pougatch said.

“One of the Colombia technical staff clearly elbowing him.

“The referee is then getting involved, look at that. Puts his elbow into him.”

Former England and United right-back Gary Neville made his feelings known, responding simply with: “That coach is a numpty for doing that to Raheem Sterling.”
