Walker wants to emulate Barcelona

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker says his side have the potential to emulate the success that Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team of 10/11 had.

The right-back moved to the Etihad in the summer from Spurs and has been part an integral part of City’s brilliant start to the campaign so far.

City remain unbeaten so far this season, and look almost unstoppable in all the competitions they have played in. But Walker wants to continue their brilliant run and take it a step further by emulating the success of manager Pep Guardiola’s famous Barcelona side that conquered Europe from 2010 onwards.

Guardiola won two Champions League crowns and three La Liga titles during his four-year reign at the Nou Camp, leading many to believe it is one of the greatest sides that has ever existed. And Walker believes that the motivation of his City team is to get onto the same level.

“It’s a lovely compliment because what a team that was,” he said. “If we can come close to what they achieved in his reign there at Barcelona it’ll be fantastic.

“But let’s not just settle for that, let’s go above that if we can because we’ve got the players to do it, got the manager and hopefully we can merge everything together and come up with something special.

“Last season that City didn’t really get many points against the big teams, so to win the first three of them is fantastic.

“Definitely going to Stamford Bridge and picking up those very important three points there, which I think then sent a message out to the rest of the Premier League that we mean business.

“They (City) were a good team last year, they just didn’t really click at the right time and they had some bad results.

“But this year has been fantastic – I can’t put any fault on it. The players have really took to the manager since I got here, even the new additions have slotted in really well.

“We’re all keen to learn and we all want to improve as well.

“We’re professionals. We train hard day in day out, come a Saturday, or if it’s in the Champions League, so we need to apply ourselves in the right manner.

“We’ve got to not take our foot off the gas because it’s a long season to play and we know come this winter period it’s a very important time and we need to just keep getting these results and let’s see where we are at the end of the season.”
