‘We Need Him For 2 More Years’ ‘Player/Coach’ City Fans Call For Veteran To Be Handed New Contract After Cup Final Display

Manchester City captain Fernandinho put in an excellent performance to help marshal his side to a Carabao Cup final triumph against Tottenham yesterday.

With Rodri benched, the 35-year-old was asked to play as a lone holding midfielder, and he rolled back the years, protecting the back four and preventing any counter-attacks from Spurs.

Fernandinho’s contract expires at the end of the campaign, and many believe it is his last season at the Etihad Stadium. However, some fans on Twitter would like him to stay on in some capacity:

The Brazilian could return to his homeland, where he could play for his first club Atletico Paranaense, but his agent revealed in January that he does have offers to stay in Europe too.

At this stage, the prospects of Fernandinho remaining at City look remote, despite the fact he can still do a job for manager Pep Guardiola. Both his leadership and footballing abilities will be missed when he does leave.
