Manchester City have joined the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle in pursuing Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, according to reports in the English media.
The 27-year-old has been in excellent form this season, having racked up 10 goals and eight assists in 39 appearances, but it is believed the Saints would hold out for around £60m if City made an approach for their captain.
Supporters on Twitter had a mixed reaction to the story, with some believing Ward-Prowse would be an excellent addition to the squad, while others feel he isn’t good enough:
JWP would be an awesome signing , I don’t think it will happen he will stay at the Saints , total loyalty .

Absolutely no way we’re signing a passenger like Ward Prowse.

Would love JWP to come in as the gundo type CM but we probably need a DM more

JWP probably doesn’t have the energy we need in CM. We feel it when Gundogan plays because he doesn’t have the legs of KDB or Bernardo

With Ilkay Gundogan expected to leave the Etihad this summer, Ward-Prowse would actually be a decent replacement, but the England international’s price tag is way too much.
Ward-Prowse may well be a very good player, and he is a world-class set-piece taker, but paying £60m for someone who is already 27 isn’t something that City would usually do. There are likely to be cheaper and younger options on the market.
