Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart claims PSV Eindhoven will accept a €40m (£34m) offer for captain Cody Gakpo this summer.

The Dutchman has been in excellent form this season, scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions, leading to the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal taking a keen interest in him. Van der Vaart believes if a team does table a sizeable bid for Gakpo, PSV won’t be able to turn it down:

“Normally I’d say that he should stay as long as possible, but he is already the engine of PSV. If there is a nice challenge, he should go. If someone wants to pay forty million, you have to take it immediately.”

City’s interest in Gakpo will very much depend on the futures of Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez. The wingers all have contracts that expire in 2023 and there is a possibility that the trio could be sold before they leave on a free transfer at the end of next season.

Gakpo generally plays off the left wing, cutting in onto his stronger right foot, but he can also play off the right and up front. Such flexibility may make him an attractive target for manager Pep Guardiola.
