Merson Lavishes Praise On 27 Year Old Who Makes City Look Like A “Completely Different Team” When He Plays

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson claims Rodri’s return to Manchester City’s starting lineup has helped the team dramatically improve their form.

Much of the praise went to Bernardo Silva after his display in the 3-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, but Merson claims that it was the presence of Rodri that allowed the Portuguese playmaker to make the impact he did. Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, the Arsenal legend said:

“Rodri returned against Manchester United after serving his suspension and Manchester City looked like a completely different team. Suddenly, Bernardo Silva was absolutely magnificent as he had an insurance policy behind him to allow him to do whatever he wanted on the ball.”

It should be pointed out that Rodri had actually played against Brighton in the league fixture prior to the match at Old Trafford but Merson’s remarks about Rodri’s importance to City still stand.

The City midfielder has a unique skillset

As fans of the Cityzens will know, Rodri isn’t simply a holding midfielder that allows the more technical players around him to do their jobs.

The 27-year-old is just as capable of playing in more advanced positions, having scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists already this season. On occasion, he can also be deployed in a backline if required.

City will be keen to build on their win in the derby

After some rather dodgy displays before the last international break, Pep Guardiola’s side have righted the ship somewhat in recent weeks, with three consecutive wins.

The result at Old Trafford, in particular, should give City the confidence they need heading into a challenging run of games over the next month.

After taking on Bournemouth this weekend, the Premier League champions face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before fixtures against three other top 5 teams in Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa.
