REPORT: Arsenal Add £42M City Star To ‘List’ Of Options To ‘Replace Jorginho’

Arsenal are considering whether to make an approach for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Fichajes.net.

The Spanish rumour mongers claim that the 27-year-old is on a “list of possible signings” as they seek to “replace Jorginho.”

Although the Italian international only moved to the Gunners from Chelsea for £12m back in January, he has struggled for minutes this season and it appears Phillips could be targeted if the midfielder departs the Emirates.

Whether City would be willing to sell the midfielder, after spending £42m to bring him in from Leeds last year, it is up for debate.

With Rodri being consistently picked ahead of Phillips by manager Pep Guardiola, the Englishman has hardly got a look in. He has started just twice in the Premier League since the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign.

Guardiola has praised Phillips’ ability

Despite rarely picking the player, Guardiola did single out the midfielder for praise after the 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the weekend:

“I’m so pleased for him because he’s an incredible guy, never one bad face when he didn’t play the minutes. I know he’s a player for the national team of England, and with me, with us he doesn’t play much. But he played really good and helped us a lot.”

With Rodri suspended for the next 3 games after his sending off on Saturday, it may simply be the case that Guardiola is trying to boost Phillips’ confidence ahead of upcoming fixtures where he could be asked to start.

Would City consider selling another player to Arsenal?

Even if the Premier League champions do decide to dispense with the services of Phillips in a future transfer window, you can’t see him being sold to a direct rival.

The Citizens have had dealings with the Gunners recently but, now they are genuine title contenders, there is no incentive to strengthen their squad further by handing over Phillips.
